Researcher Fengchen Liang, Vice Chairman of Shandong Province Seeds Group Co., Ltd., Visits Weifang and Qingdao to Investigate Field Performance of New Varieties

On June 22–23, 2026, Researcher Fengchen Liang, Vice Chairman of Shandong Province Seeds Group Co., Ltd., led a team to key growing regions in Weifang and Qingdao to conduct a specialized field survey on the performance of new varieties of carrots and Japanese Welsh onion. The research team visited multiple cultivation sites, including Shouguang in Weifang and Pingdu in Qingdao. Taking into account regional differences in soil, climate, and cultivation conditions, the team employed standardized research methods such as fixed-point observation, field data collection, and trait recording. They focused on evaluating the comprehensive performance of the new carrot varieties—specifically the development of their edible roots—as well as the growth habits and bolting resistance of the new Japanese Welsh onion varieties.

During the field survey, the company’s product development and marketing teams went out to the front lines to meticulously record cultivation data, suitable crop rotations, and corresponding field management measures for each new variety, comprehensively gathering feedback from the field. Judging by their overall field performance, some of the new varieties exhibited excellent traits and demonstrated strong results. Among them, a new carrot variety showed outstanding field characteristics: the roots were uniform and well-formed, with a deep, pure red skin color; under normal growing conditions, they reached a length of 20–22 centimeters; the overall appearance was consistent; and they possessed excellent commercial qualities, making them suitable for large-scale cultivation and commercial market sales.

In addition, this new variety of Japanese Welsh onion has demonstrated significant advantages in field trials. The plants are compact and uniform, with thick, deep-green leaves and plump, pungent bulbs. The white part of the onion is firm and measures approximately 40 centimeters in length, with a smooth, even shape. It exhibits excellent resistance to bolting and is well-suited to the environmental requirements of overwintering cultivation, earning unanimous recognition from local growers and distributors.

This variety survey yielded fruitful results, fully validating the regional adaptability and cultivation advantages of the company’s new carrot and Welsh onion varieties. It clearly delineated the suitable cultivation areas and market positioning for each variety, providing field-tested data to support the strategic deployment of high-quality vegetable varieties. Moving forward, the company will build on the on-the-ground findings from this survey to continue advancing breeding innovation and field demonstrations, continuously develop high-quality vegetable varieties suited to northern production areas, improve the market promotion service system, and enhance the quality improvement and upgrading of the regional vegetable industry.

Xiaoming Zhang, CEO of Shandong Province Seeds Group Co., Ltd.; Chao Liang, Director of the Qingdao Office and Manager of the Solanaceae Promotion Department; and Mingxing Guo, Regional Sales Manager for North China and Manager of the Product Development Department, participated in this research visit. Tao Wei, a specialist from the Marketing Department, provided full support throughout the event and handled the live broadcast.
